1.Quranic studies
Quran and Sunnah are the prime sources of Maulana’s academic work. He seeks guidance from these sources and gives reference from them abundantly. Besides these, he has also penned a number of articles on Quranic subjects. For example ‘How to read the book of Allah?’, ‘Introduction to the Quran’, ‘Companions of the Prophet expert in the Quran’, ‘The Quranic concept of wisdom’, ‘The ratification of zikr in the light of Quran’, ‘The reality of piety’ etc. A complete book is proposed to be published incorporating all these articles.
2. Seerath
Besides writing a series of articles on the need for prophethood, Maulana wrote various articles depicting different aspects of Prophet Mohammad’s (PBUH) seerath. For example ‘Brotherhood of Mecca’ ‘Scholarly Contributions of prophet Mohammad (PBUH) ‘ , ‘ Prophet Mohammad’s (PBUH) instruction on Tableegh’ ,’ Prophet Mohammad’s (PBUH) Dawah Letters’, ‘ Meccan life of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) ‘ etc. The peculiarity of these articles is that they have been written keeping in view the modern compulsions. They deal with various aspects of the life of prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in such a way that many contemporary issues can be resolved in the light of these articles. These articles could be compiled into a book.
3.Beliefs
Maulana authored many valuable books to explain the fundamental beliefs of Islam. His book entitled ‘The concept of Allah and His messenger (Rasul) in Islamic teachings’ is very famous on this topic. This book discusses the concept of the unity in Allah and the concept of ‘Risalath’ (Prophethood). An analysis of the modern theories of God and Religion is also given. The omnipresence of Allah and the need for Rasul have been discussed in a rational and scientific style. His another important book entitled ‘Human being and his problems’ deals with the issues which a human being encounters during his whole life time. Important and fundamental among these are issues related to beliefs. Islam offers a comprehensive solution to all these problems. Articles on the reality, possibility, necessity of prophethood and other topics have also been published by Maulana. The significance of the articles on beliefs is that the style adopted is scientific and appealing to the reader.
4- Dawah
The other topic on which the Maulana has deliberated in scholarly way is the need for Islamic Dawah, its importance and the way it has to be practised. In this connection his book entitled ‘Maroof-va-Munkir’ became very popular. In this book Maulana has dealt with the obligation of ‘Amr bil maroof va nahi anil munkir’ (Enjoining the virtue and Forbidding the Evil), its importance and need for Islamic Dawah, the resources it needed, its manners etc. in detail. Another book on the same topic is ‘Islam ki Dawat’. Principles and Islamic Dawah, ways of its implementation, necessary characteristics of the workers in the field of Dawah and the need of an organization for Dawah have been discussed here. In addition to these books, more than two dozen research articles on concepts of Dawah have been published in various journals.
5- Society
The most significant work of Maulana is on Islamic society. Maulana has published five books on this topic. They are:
- Woman in Islamic society
- Woman and Islam
- Rights of Muslim women and a review the objection against them
- Responsibilities of Mulsim Woman
- Personal law of Islam
The status of woman in Islam, their rights, areas of work are the issues discussed in these books. A comparison of rights given to women in other civilizations with the rights given in Islam has also been made. Objections raised by the opponents of Islam have been answered with convincing logic. Maulana has also written on various aspects of family, for example legal status of Nikah (Marriage), Meher (Dowry), Nufqa (maintenance for wife), Radha’at (Breast feeding), Hadhanat (Custody of the child), Khula, Inheritance, maintenance of the orphans, rights and duties of parents, rights of children. On these topics Maulana’s articles have been published in various journals. A collection of articles on the family system in Islam is proposed to be published. Thus the works of Maulana on Social Aspect of Islam covers a wide range. Included in it are philosophical discussions, matters related to jurisprudence and law and also historical reviews. The wide range of contributions Maulana made on the Social Aspect of Islam is unprecedented.
- Contemporary issues
An aspect of Maulana’s work comprises the explanation of contemporary issues from Islamic point of view. For example, what should be the nature of relations with the non-Muslims? In the Indian context, from the point of view of Dawah, it is an important topic. Maulana’s latest book entitled ‘Relation with non-Muslims and their Rights’ deals these issues in detail. Nowadays importance is being given to the welfare activities. Maulana in his book entitled ‘Concept of Social Service’ has discussed this issue from Islamic point of view. Movements for the equal rights for the weaker sections are active with greater enthusiasm. How has Islam solved such problems? Maulana has published many articles in various journals on this topic. It is also proposed to compile these articles in the form of a book. In the modern world the problems of health and patients have gained universal significance. Euthanasia and support for it is rising the worldwide. Maulana in his book ‘Health, Sickness and Islamic Teaching’ and ‘Islam and difficulties of life’ has discussed these issues from Islamic point of view. His book ‘Where is country heading to’ and ‘Delicate issues of the country and of the Muslim Ummah and our responsibilities’ express, Maulana’s concern for corruption, lawlessness, terrorism, communalism etc.
Characteristic features of writings
Strength of Arguments
Maulana’s writings are not emotionally based. They are founded on strong evidences and arguments. As an Islamic scholar, he is well versed with Quran, Sunnah and the writings of classic Islamic writers. Wherever he says something, in support of his statement, he quotes from commentaries of Quran and Hadith and Islamic jurists. Thus the matter is presented to the reader with clarity and the reader also understands that the author is not saying anything without authenticity but he has Quran and Hadith in support of his view and a large number of classic scholars are behind him.
Rational Appeal
He not only draws his arguments from his predecessors but also appeals to the mental faculties of the readers. He argues on various aspects of faith and society. He proves his arguments with proofs amenable to reason. This style of writing penetrates into the heart of the reader and voice of the author sounds like his own voice.
Broadness in the matters of jurisprudence
Maulana’s position in the matters of jurisprudence is characterized by broadmindedness. He is not content with representing a particular school of jurisprudence but he takes into consideration all the four schools of thought . He reviews their opinions and if need be, he gives preference to a certain opinion which fulfill the modern needs and compulsions.
Literary Compilation
Maulana had a good taste and flair for writing right from his student days. His articles published in ‘Al-Insaaf’ Allahabad and ‘Tajalli’ (Monthly), Deoband are a testimony of that period.
Description of Contemporary Issues
The writings of Maulana are not mere research documents and they do not merely encompass historical and ancient topics but also take into account current issues. He has offered concrete suggestions to solve these problems. Maulana has dealt with these issues from the Islamic point of view and the solutions are also from the Islamic teachings. It is an important intellectual endeavor attempted during the present time.
Literary Touch
Islamic scholars are said to be lacking the literary taste. Maulana’s writings are unique in the sense of that in spite of dealing with deep scholarly expositions; there is flair of literary aesthetics. One gets delighted after reading his writings instead of getting bored.
High level research
Maulana’s topics cover varied topics. Be it faith or dawah; a discussion of any aspect of Islamic societal behaviour or the presentation of a solution to any modern problem, Maulana’s writings do complete justice with authenticity to the topics discussed. He maintains high level research and deduction. He does not dwell on secondary sources but rely first hand material.
